The Illusion of Separation: A Somatic Perspective on the Wisdom of the Ego
The Illusion of Separation in the Body: A Somatic Perspective
In my work as a bodyworker, breathworker and nonverbal communication consultant, I explore how the body holds the story of our first experience of separation - and how that experience shapes the way we think, feel, and relate to the world.
From the moment we are born, the body undergoes a profound transition. We move from a state of complete connection - where all needs are met effortlessly - to a reality where we must breathe, receive, and exist as an individual. For many, this is the body’s first imprint of separation.
This moment doesn’t just happen momentarily
- it is felt, registered, and remembered in the nervous system.
The Birth of the Conditioned Mind
As we begin to experience life through this lens of separation, the mind organizes itself around a core belief:
“I am separate.”
From a somatic perspective, this can become the foundation of what we often call the ego or conditioned mind. It is the part of us that learns how to navigate the world, protect ourselves, and seek connection again.
Over time, this initial imprint can evolve into deeper internal narratives:
“I am not enough, so I must prove myself.”
“I am not wanted, so I must earn belonging.”
“I am alone, so I must figure everything out.”
These thoughts don’t arise randomly - they are adaptive strategies shaped by early experience.
The Right Side of the Body and the Burden of Doing
In my bodywork practice, I often observe that the right side of the body carries a particular kind of charge.
I relate this side oftentimes to “doing”, assertion - the part of us that gives, performs, and responds to external demands.
When the core belief of separation is active, the body can organize itself around effort, and often struggle.:
The shoulder tightens with responsibility
The chest braces with pressure
The breath becomes restricted
It’s as if the body is saying:
“I have to do more in order to belong.”
This creates a loop - where thought and body reinforce each other. The mind generates pressure, and the body carries it.
The Echo of the Conditioned Self
What I call the “echoic conditioned mind” is this ongoing internal dialogue shaped by past imprints. It’s not who we are at our core - it’s a pattern that repeats until it is felt, witnessed, and released.
Through informed touch, conscious breath, and nonverbal awareness, we can begin to access these deeper layers -not by analyzing them, but by experiencing them directly in the body.
Returning to Connection
Healing, in this work, is not about fixing something that is broken.
It is about remembering.
When the body feels safe enough, it begins to soften its grip on the belief of separation. The breath deepens. The nervous system settles. The need to constantly “do” begins to dissolve.
And a deep FELT understanding
of PRESENT TIME begins to settle within your being,
all of life awakens more fully inside you.
And in that space, something else emerges:
A sense of connection that was never actually lost - only obscured.
This is the essence of somatic intelligence:
The body remembers what the mind has forgotten.
